Assistive Technology (A.T.) Definition

What is Assistive Technology, and how can it help your child learn?

Assistive technology helps kids with learning disabilities access information. A.T. also helps kids communicate more easily. It helps them finish their learning tasks. A.T. gives kids the ability to finish their learning lessons, and it provides better access to the general curriculum.

[amazon_auto_links asin=’1598570919′]

A.T. also helps kids finish assignments they wouldn’t be able to work without help. Technology can provide access to lessons and information, especially when a child can’t yet read. It can also help kids write, or work math calculations.

Our special education laws require equal access for learning abled kids’ education. The U.S. Federal “Americans with Disabilities Act” (ADA) and the “Individuals with Disabilities Education Act” (IDEA) both cover learning disabilities laws.

Using technology to make learning more accessible to kids makes sense. It helps a child learn. Additionally, there are many educational and commercial technologies that can help with learning. Therefore, there is no good reason not to provide learning technology.

Whether your child has ADHD, Aspergers, dyslexia, dysgraphia, executive function deficits, or some other learning disabilities, he has a right to learn! SO, find technology to help your child learn. It is one of the best things you can do to help your child.

If your child needs help, then check out the Reading, Writing, Math and other pages.

Therefore, having dyslexia or a reading disability hurts a child’s access to learning a LOT. If your child doesn’t have help with reading, then it can cause him to fall behind in all subjects.

Assistive technology for dyslexia and reading disabilities can help your child work by himself. Tools for reading can also help your child learn to read better and learn more in all subjects. Truly, using assistive technology helps a child learn better in a LOT of ways.

Our Usage of Assistive Technology for Dyslexia and Reading

Before our sons could read, we used audio books for things he needed to read. Since my older son had severe dyslexia, he couldn’t read on grade-level until sixth grade. With audio books, he could listen to the books that were part of his grade’s program. That way he didn’t miss out on books other kids his age could read.

SO, there is NO reason for your child to miss out on grade level books. (Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks) Your child can stay on grade level by using audio books, but not all books are easily available as audio books.

You should know, many textbook printers have audio book versions too. Many times, the audio versions can be bought through their websites. IF you are homeschooling, then you can buy the audio books from them. You may have to send some kind of proof first. If you’re not schooling at home, your child’s school should be able to get the audio book for you.

Let me ask also, have you thought about helping your child overcome dyslexia or a reading disability? If so, then check out LearningAbledKids’ how to overcome dyslexia page. You CAN help your child with the right tools!

Assistive technology for dyslexia and reading problems is listed below. There are high, medium, and low tech items, so you can choose the assistive technology that helps your child the most.

I’ve also included information about assistive technology for writing, math, and executive functioning (ADHD) on this site too.
